Despite that the EPIC II microscope is now used for office based cataract surgery and ICL implantations in the US, the EPIC II microscope was built originally for MSICS/SICS in rural environments.  This photo was sent by Dr. Toney who practices in rural DRC and has been using the EPIC II microscope for over 5 years.  The pictures show the challenges that he faces just to get to some of his outreach sites.  The EPIC II travels by motorbike and in the truck through mud and rough roads in order to operate in remote villages that may not have dependable electricity.

These images were sent via WhatsApp, the wonderful phone app that connects us around the world.  Please see Dr. Toney's own words about his experience with the EPIC II Microscope.

"On my behalf, tell them that this microscope has travelled thousands of kilometers across Tanganyika Province , strapped to motorbikes, loaded into trucks, into boats and carried through mud and dust — yet it has remained a faithful partner in more than 5,000 cataract surgeries over five years. Exposed to tropical heat, humidity, and rough transport conditions, and often used with limited electricity, it has consistently maintained perfect optical clarity. Its endurance under such real-world stress is a true testament to the quality of its manufacturer."
